Trek Overview

The Snow Lake Trek follows the Biafo and Hispar glaciers, two of the world's longest non-polar ice streams, across a 21-day traverse that crosses the Karakoram from Askole to Hispar village, meeting at Hispar La Pass, 5,151 meters. Snow Lake itself is a 16-kilometer glacial plateau where the Biafo (67km) and Hispar (49km) systems converge at roughly 5,000 meters, seeing fewer than 100 trekkers a year, one of the range's most isolated multi-week routes. From Askole (3,050m), the route follows the Biafo Glacier's lateral moraine past Baintha Brakk (7,285m) and the Latok peaks, reaching Baintha (4,035m) on Day 7, where a rest day allows the body to adjust before the terrain steepens. The approach continues to Hispar La Base Camp (4,590m) on Day 10, the staging point for the crossing itself. Snow Lake's crossing, 11 kilometers of crevassed glacier, leads to Hispar La Pass at 5,151 meters, the trek's high point and its most demanding single day. From there, the route descends the Hispar Glacier through Kani Basa, Jutmal, and Bitanma to Hispar village (2,297m) on Day 16, trading ice for alpine meadows over the final descent. This is a route for trekkers with real high-altitude and glacier experience. Seven nights are spent above 4,000 meters, with the highest camp at 5,149 meters just below the pass. Daily walking runs 4 to 8 hours across lateral moraine, crevassed snowfields, and the Snow Lake plateau itself, where weather can shift quickly and visibility matters as much as fitness. Past Baintha, the commitment is real; exit options narrow for the better part of a week, and the Hispar La crossing demands sustained concentration on terrain that doesn't forgive a wandering line. 14 Adventure's guides have specific experience on the Biafo-Hispar glacier system, not just general Karakoram trekking experience, and bring that route-specific judgment to assessing crevasse risk and crossing conditions day by day. The group travels roped together across Snow Lake's crevassed sections for safety, with rope for the group included as part of the trip. A Thuraya satellite phone is carried throughout for emergency contact, with usage charges at the client's own expense, and a high-altitude evacuation membership such as Global Rescue is strongly recommended given the terrain's remoteness. Two contingency days, at Aliabad and in Islamabad, are built in to absorb the delays that come with Skardu flights and high-altitude crossings. This traverse runs June through September, when glacier conditions allow safe passage.
