Trek Overview

The Rush Lake Trek climbs through Nagar Valley's Bualtar and Barpu Glaciers to one of the highest alpine lakes in the world — a still, ice-fed pool at 4,694 meters, ringed by a wall of Karakoram giants. Reached without a restricted-zone permit, though inside the boundaries of Central Karakoram National Park, this is a genuinely demanding short trek, not the casual introduction some operators market it as — experienced trekkers consistently describe the dry, relentless climbs and thin air as tougher than the "beginner-friendly" label suggests. The route begins in Hopar, a village known for its fruit orchards and notable as one of the few inhabited places in the world sitting directly above a glacier. The trail crosses the Bualtar (Hopar) Glacier within the first hour, then zigzags across the Barpu Glacier's ice for a couple of hours before exiting onto a long, dry, largely waterless stretch to camp at Bericho Kor (3,300m). From Bericho Kor, the trek's hardest single push begins: a relentless, zigzagging 700-meter climb up a dry, dusty ridge with almost no flat ground, gaining the crest that divides the Barpu Glacier valley from the Hispar Glacier to the north, before the trail eases into a further climb to Chidin Harai (4,440m). A further push the next day reaches Rush Lake itself — a turquoise or ice-covered pool depending on season, cupped beneath a ring of 7,000-meter peaks. A rest day at the lake allows for an optional push along the ridge to Rush Phari Peak (5,098m), a steep but non-technical climb over loose boulders in the final stretch. On a clear day, the summit delivers a genuine rarity: K2 (8,611m), visible without committing to a full expedition to its base camp, alongside Broad Peak (8,051m), Muztagh Tower (7,276m), Malubiting (7,458m), and Golden Peak/Spantik (7,027m). "A comparable K2 view is the central objective of the Moses Peak Trek, a shorter 11-day route in Baltistan's Hushe Valley that requires no park entry permit. The descent follows a different route back toward Hopar rather than retracing the ascent — crossing the grey ice of the Sumaiyar Bar Glacier (sourced from Malubiting) and the white ice of the Barpu Glacier a second time, before reaching the small shepherd settlement of Hamdar, then Hapakun, and finally back to Hopar. Because of the pace of altitude gain — roughly 1,800 meters over the first three trekking days before a night spent near 4,700 meters — this trek rewards a realistic acclimatization plan rather than a rushed itinerary, and 14 Adventure builds rest and buffer days around exactly that.
