Trek Overview

The K2 Base Camp trek reaches Concordia at 4,691 meters, where four separate 8,000-meter peaks dominate the view—K2 (8,611m), Broad Peak (8,051m), Gasherbrum I (8,080m), and Gasherbrum II (8,035m). The 21-day circuit then pairs this panorama with the physical test of the 5,585-meter Gondogoro La pass, a semi-technical mountaineering objective that defines this expedition. For those seeking the same glacial approach to Concordia and K2 without a high-pass crossing, the standard K2 Base Camp Trek returns down the Baltoro Glacier. Both routes follow the 62-kilometer Baltoro Glacier from Askole village, passing beneath the granite spires of the Trango Towers (6,286m) and Paiju Peak (6,610m). After a rest day at the meadow camp of Urdukas (4,050m), the route reaches Concordia, where the Baltoro and Godwin-Austen glaciers meet, before continuing past Broad Peak Base Camp to an overnight stay at K2 Base Camp itself at 5,150 meters, with a visit to the Art Gilkey Memorial on the return to Concordia. From Concordia, trekkers continue to Ali Camp, then cross the 5,585-meter Gondogoro La pass using fixed ropes on steep snow slopes at 40-50 degree angles. The descent into the Hushe Valley passes the north face of Laila Peak (6,096m), completing a circuit of approximately 170 kilometers over fourteen walking days, with daily durations reaching 4-8 hours. The difficulty stems from sustained high altitude combined with specific technical requirements. Trekkers spend over seven consecutive nights above 4,000 meters, navigating glacial moraine and ice. Most days involve 4-8 hours of walking, but the Gondogoro La crossing is the exception — a 10-12 hour day demanding pre-dawn starts, the use of crampons and harnesses on 40-50° snow slopes, and coming after two weeks of trekking when cumulative fatigue is significant. While prior mountaineering experience is helpful, a dedicated training day at Concordia allows guides to teach the necessary rope and crampon skills before the crossing. This is a trek for those who are physically fit, comfortable carrying a daypack over long days, and mentally prepared for the pass itself — the built-in rest days and gradual altitude gain do the work of helping the body adjust along the way. As a ground operator, 14 Adventure runs this route to the same food safety, hygiene, and camp service standards expected by the international agencies we regularly work with — porters, kitchen staff, and camp setup are held to that standard on every departure, regardless of which agency booked the trip. For the Gondogoro La section, guides provide technical skills training at Concordia — covering crampon use, fixed-rope technique, and basic ascending and descending.
